challenge
When climate change hits the docks

Ports are the beating heart of global trade: over 80% of the goods we use every day pass through them. From food and fuel to electronics and medicines, their smooth operation is essential to our economies and our daily lives. But as climate change accelerates, ports are finding themselves on the frontline of its impacts. Extreme weather events such as storms, floods, heatwaves and droughts are becoming more frequent and intense, threatening infrastructures, disrupting supply chains and putting workers and local communities at risk.

When a port shuts down, the impact ripples far beyond the docks: supply chains break, industries pause, and cities slow down. To stay operational in this new reality, ports must become resilient: capable of anticipating, withstanding and recovering from extreme weather events while continuing to function safely and sustainably.

For We Right Click, the challenge is to raise awareness and build connections across this entire ecosystem, from citizens to port authorities, from researchers to policymakers. Our mission is to turn complex science and innovation into stories that inspire action, support decision-making and maximise the project’s long-term impact.

approach
Turning resilience into a shared story

In SAFARI, We Right Click leads the project’s communication and dissemination strategy, transforming scientific and technical results into stories that engage, inform and inspire. Our mission is to connect citizens, port professionals, researchers and decision-makers around one common goal: building resilience to extreme weather in Europe’s ports.

We are combining strategic planning with creative storytelling, producing articles, videos, infographics and social media campaigns that highlight the people and innovations shaping the ports of tomorrow. We also support partners in sharing their work, from helping organise conferences and online events to coordinating visibility actions across Europe.

To bring resilience even closer to citizens, we organise Open Days in pilot ports and are designing an educational board game that introduces younger audiences to climate adaptation in a fun, interactive way. Through this mix of strategy, creativity and collaboration, we are helping to make resilience something everyone can understand and take part in.

A growing wave of impact

SAFARI is already making waves. Our first communication boost has reached a growing network of professionals and citizens across Europe, with thousands of interactions on social media and an active flow of visits to the project website, a strong start toward building awareness and visibility for port resilience.

The first Open Day, held in Seville, brought together around 40 students from the University of Seville for a hands-on introduction to the project and its work on climate resilience in ports. The event opened the conversation between researchers, port authorities and young citizens, a first step toward the broader outreach activities planned across all pilot ports.

It’s only the beginning: as the digital tools, training actions and pilot demonstrations unfold, more stories of resilience are on their way.

EU Project
Part of the SAFARI project

SAFARI is a Horizon Europe project helping European ports stay operational and resilient during extreme weather events. As storms, floods and heatwaves become more frequent, the project aims to ensure that ports can maintain at least 80% of their operations even under extreme conditions.

To achieve this, SAFARI combines digital innovation and climate adaptation. The project develops a Digital Platform integrating Digital Twins, Smart Monitoring Systems, and Predictive Maintenance tools to help ports anticipate risks, plan responses, and recover faster after disruptions. Beyond technology, SAFARI invests in Capacity Building, strengthening the skills and collaboration between port authorities, researchers and policymakers to embed resilience into long-term planning.

Tested through three pilot ports, Dunkirk (France), Seville (Spain) and Lisbon (Portugal), and two replication sites in Livorno (Italy) and Tripoli (Lebanon), SAFARI provides practical, scalable solutions for safer, smarter and more climate-resilient ports.
